In addition to fasting, during Ramadan, every able-bodied Muslim is obligated to pay Zakat Fitrah.
According to the Chairman of the National Zakat Amil Agency (Baznas), Noor Achmad, the amount of Zakat Fitrah to be paid this year ranges from Rp45,000 to Rp55,000 per person, equivalent to 2.5 kilograms or 3.5 liters of premium rice.
"Based on careful research and thorough consideration, Baznas has decided to increase the amount of Zakat Fitrah from Rp45,000 to Rp55,000 per individual, following the dynamics of rice prices," said Noor Achmad in his press release on Thursday (14/3/2024).
Previously, in 2023, Baznas set the amount of Zakat Fitrah at Rp45,000 per person.
Noor Achmad assessed that this decision may impact some members of society. However, Baznas increased the range to ensure that the obligation of Zakat Fitrah can be fulfilled properly and in accordance with Islamic law.
He also stated that Muslims who consume rice at prices above or below this standard can adjust according to the price in their respective regions.
According to Noor Achmad, the distribution of Zakat Fitrah must be done at the latest before Eid prayer, precisely before the khatib ascends the pulpit.
"Baznas will distribute Zakat Fitrah to mustahik (recipients of Zakat) consisting of eight categories as stipulated in Islamic law," he said.
The eight categories entitled to receive Zakat according to Baznas are:
1. Fakir: a person who has no source of income whatsoever due to serious problems, such as illness.
2. Miskin: a person who has a source of income, but it is insufficient to meet their daily needs.
3. Riqab (formerly known as slaves).
4. Gharim or Gharimin: a person who has debt and is having difficulty repaying it.
5. Mualaf: a person who has recently converted to Islam.
6. Fiisabilillah: a fighter for the Islamic religion.
7. Ibnu Sabil: a person who has run out of provisions on a long journey.
8. Amil: a person who distributes Zakat.
