According to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), the average per capita expenditure of Indonesian residents in March 2023 was Rp1,451,870/capita/month, a 9.35% increase compared to March of the previous year.
This figure includes total expenditure on food and non-food consumption, and is an average of both rural and urban residents' expenditure.
BPS estimates that the average national per capita expenditure in March 2023 increased due to various factors, ranging from inflation and increased economic growth to a decrease in the open unemployment rate.
BPS also mentions that the increase in average expenditure shows the impact of the government's social protection programs, both in the form of social assistance and subsidies, which have helped increase the spending of vulnerable economic groups.
"It is important to remember that the increase in per capita expenditure is not just about the amount of money spent, but also about the ability of individuals and households to meet their basic needs, including food, housing, education, and health services," said BPS in its report.
Furthermore, when detailed at the provincial level, the per capita expenditure of Indonesian residents varies significantly.
Of the 34 provinces recorded by BPS, 14 provinces had per capita expenditures above the national average. The remaining 20 provinces were below the average, as shown in the graph.
