The gross domestic product (GDP) of the coal and lignite mining subsector at current prices (ADHB) reached Rp603.14 trillion in 2021.
This figure accounts for 39.59% of the total GDP of the mining and quarrying sector, which amounted to Rp1.52 quadrillion.
Measured in terms of GDP at constant 2010 prices (ADHK), the coal and lignite mining subsector grew by 6.6% to Rp261.71 trillion in 2021 compared to the previous year.
The growth of this subsector in 2021 was better than the previous year, which experienced a contraction of 5.43%.
However, this achievement is still lower than before the Covid-19 pandemic, which managed to grow by over 10% in 2019, as shown in the graph.
The global economy's recovery from the pandemic's impact increased the demand for coal exports. As a result, coal prices in the international market rose throughout 2021.
Along with this price movement, Indonesia's coal exports increased slightly by 1.14% to 345.45 million tons in 2021 compared to the previous year. Their value surged by 82.59% to US$26.53 billion from US$14.53 billion the previous year.
In 2021, Indonesia's largest coal exports were sent to China, with a volume of 108.49 million tons, or 31.1% of total national coal exports, and a total value of US$9.14 billion.
