The Indonesian workforce is dominated by workers in agriculture, forestry, and fisheries.

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the structure of the working population by main occupation field in February 2023 was still dominated by the agriculture, forestry, and fisheries category, accounting for 29.36% of the total working population.

The wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles category followed with a percentage of 18.93%. This was followed by the manufacturing industry category at 13.58%.

The accommodation and food service activities category accounted for 7.32%. This was followed by the construction category, completing the top six with 6.21%.

"The majority of employment sectors—11 out of 17 categories—experienced an increase in the percentage of the working population over the past year," wrote the BPS in its report.

The largest increases occurred in the categories of other service activities (0.28%), accommodation and food service activities (0.21%), and construction (0.17%).

When separated by gender, BPS found the largest gap in the proportion of male and female workers in the construction category.

Specifically, male workers in construction accounted for 14.65%, while female workers accounted for only 0.25%.
