Indonesia remains vulnerable to the circulation of counterfeit money. According to data from Bank Indonesia (BI), cases are detected every month across various regions.
Between May 2023 and May 2024, the number of counterfeit banknotes found ranged from 8,000 to 32,000 per month.
Over the past year, the highest number of counterfeit banknotes was recorded in July 2023, and the lowest in April 2024, as detailed in the graph.
The ratio of findings ranged from 1 to 5 counterfeit banknotes per 1 million banknotes in circulation each month.
BI collects this counterfeit money data from reports from banks, the public, and police investigations.
In the latest case, on June 15, 2024, the Jakarta Metro Police (Polda Metro Jaya) discovered 220,000 counterfeit banknotes, totaling Rp22 billion (approximately US$1.47 million).
The counterfeit money was found in an accounting firm's office in Kembangan, West Jakarta.
Polda Metro Jaya stated that perpetrators of counterfeiting can be charged with criminal offenses, facing up to 15 years imprisonment.
They also urged the public to report any information regarding the circulation of counterfeit money to the police.
The public can verify the authenticity of Indonesian Rupiah banknotes using the 3D method: look, feel, and hold up to the light. Details are as follows:
* Look: Genuine banknotes have bright, clear colors and a security thread embedded in the paper, appearing as a transverse or interwoven line that changes color.
* Feel: Genuine banknotes have numbers, letters, the Garuda bird image, and the main image that feel rough to the touch.
* Hold up to the light: Genuine banknotes have a watermark of the depicted hero clearly visible when held up to the light.
