Bank Indonesia (BI) Finds 188,370 Counterfeit Banknotes Through July 2021

Bank Indonesia (BI) recorded 188,370 counterfeit rupiah banknotes in circulation in Indonesia from January to July 2021. This figure is a 43.16% increase compared to the same period the previous year, which amounted to 107,058 banknotes.

The ratio of counterfeit rupiah banknotes found from January to July 2021 was 3 banknotes per 1 million banknotes in circulation. This ratio indicates that for every 1 million rupiah banknotes in circulation, only 3 counterfeit banknotes were found.

Monthly, the highest number of counterfeit rupiah banknotes was found in July 2021, reaching 120,027 banknotes. This figure increased by 1,337% from the previous month, which was only 8,348 banknotes.

By province, the most counterfeit rupiah banknotes were found in DKI Jakarta in the first seven months of this year, namely 145,791 banknotes. In West Java, 14,676 counterfeit banknotes were found.

Furthermore, 10,511 counterfeit rupiah banknotes were found in East Java. Meanwhile, 5,065 counterfeit rupiah banknotes were detected in Central Java.

The eradication of counterfeit rupiah banknotes is carried out through the Coordinating Body for the Eradication of Counterfeit Money (Botasupal). This is as stipulated in Law Number 7 of 2011 concerning Rupiah Currency.
