Bauxite is the raw material for making aluminum. Bauxite is usually formed in the upper soil layer and is generally found in humid and hot regions.
According to a report by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), total global bauxite production amounted to 390 million metric tons in 2021. This figure decreased by 0.25% from the previous year, which amounted to 391 million metric tons.
Australia was the world's largest bauxite producer in 2021, with production reaching 110 million metric tons.
China was in second place with bauxite production reaching 86 million metric tons. Following this was Guinea with production of 85 million metric tons.
Brazil ranked fourth with bauxite production of 32 million metric tons, followed by India with 22 million metric tons.
Currently, global bauxite resources are estimated to be between 55 billion and 75 billion metric tons, spread across Africa (32%), Oceania (23%), South America and the Caribbean (21%), Asia (18%), and other regions (6%).
