Distribution of Mining and Quarrying Sectors in Indonesia, 2024

According to a report by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), there were 112,328 mining companies in Indonesia in 2024. 

Of this total, 97.64% were household businesses and 2.36% were legally incorporated companies.

Based on the type of excavated material, sand was the most commonly exploited commodity. Its number reached 42,074 units, equivalent to 37.46% of the total mining companies in the country.

The following is a breakdown of the number of mining companies in Indonesia based on their primary excavated material in 2024:

• Sand: 42,074 units
• Stone and Andesite: 28,596 units
• Gravel: 5,691 units
• Limestone: 3,430 units
• Clay: 2,624 units
• Soil: 2,448 units
• Granite: 491 units
• Quartz Sand: 216 units
• Marble: 156 units
• Kaolin: 75 units
• Feldspar: 16 units
• Others: 26,511 units

BPS also recorded that mining companies in Indonesia employed 416,239 people in 2024. 

"The average number of workers in mining companies was 17 people, and an average of 3 people worked in individual mining operations," BPS wrote in its report Statistics of Mineral Mining in Indonesia 2024.
