According to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (Kementerian ESDM), at the end of 2022, Indonesia had verified coal reserves of 33.37 billion tons.

12. West Sumatra: 8.9 million tons
13. West Sulawesi: 1.8 million tons
14. South Sulawesi: 1.3 million tons
15. West Kalimantan: 430 thousand tons

According to the Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) 2021-2030, coal will still dominate Indonesia's energy mix until 2030.

In the RUPTL, PLN (PLN) also projects that the national coal-fired power generation capacity will increase from 194,558 GWh in 2021 to 264,260 GWh in 2030.

On the other hand, the government aims to gradually cease operations of several coal-fired power plants (PLTU) (Pembangkit Listrik Tenaga Uap (PLTU)) by 2040 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (emisi gas rumah kaca).

"The early retirement mechanism for coal-fired PLTU will be implemented gradually, both naturally and through earlier retirement, replacing them with new renewable energy (energi baru terbarukan),” said PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo in a press release on Wednesday (19/10/2022).
