By December 2018, Indonesia had 343 cinemas and 1,756 screens. Cinema 21 controlled over half of the market, with 186 cinemas (54.2 percent) and 1,024 screens (58.3 percent).
However, other cinema chains continued to grow, such as CGV (54 cinemas and 331 screens) and Cinemaxx (48 cinemas and 239 screens). Both are expanding into cities outside provincial capitals that Cinema 21 has not yet reached.
Furthermore, several new chains have emerged, offering alternatives to viewers. These include New Star Cineplex, Independen, Platinum Cineplex, Movimax, Dakota Cinema, Flix Cinema, and Golden Theater.
According to reports from filmindonesia.or.id and the Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf), the number of cinemas and screens in 2018 increased by 136.5 percent and 188.3 percent respectively since 2012.
