There are many things that people can do to maintain environmental sustainability.
According to a survey by the research agency GlobeScan, the action considered to have the most significant impact is waste recycling.
In July-August 2023, GlobeScan surveyed approximately 29,500 people across 31 countries, including large populations such as India, China, the United States, and Indonesia.
In this survey, the majority, or 68%, of respondents considered recycling to be the most impactful environmental action.
Other actions widely considered important include reducing food waste, reducing plastic purchases, and buying eco-friendly products.
Some also rated the best environmental actions as saving energy at home, using public transportation, maintaining goods to make them durable and long-lasting, and conserving water.
Consumers Aren't Always Right
The various actions mentioned above generally do have a positive impact. However, consumer perception is not entirely accurate.
According to GlobeScan, there are other actions that could actually contribute more significantly to environmental sustainability, but they are not widely chosen by respondents because they are difficult to implement.
"Most people don't understand which actions have the biggest impact on the environment," said the GlobeScan team in their *Healthy & Sustainable Living Report 2023*.
"Environmentally friendly actions that are difficult to perform tend to be considered less impactful, such as reducing meat consumption, buying secondhand goods, or avoiding air travel," they continued.
GlobeScan believes this indicates a gap in knowledge and education among the global population.
They also believe that sustainable living is difficult to implement on a massive scale if it relies solely on consumer actions, without intervention from the government and industry.
"Consumers cannot be expected to drive large-scale behavioral change, as there are factors beyond their control, such as financial constraints and infrastructure limitations," said the GlobeScan team.
"We need to change our approach, no longer relying on consumer responsibility to make the right choices, but encouraging companies to enable consumers to live better and more sustainably," they continued.
