Ukraine Civilian Casualties Highest in Donetsk and Luhansk

Citing data from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the highest number of civilian casualties from the war in Ukraine are found in the border regions of Ukraine and Russia, namely Donetsk and Luhansk.

The OHCHR found 503 casualties in Donetsk and Luhansk, comprising 88 deaths and 415 injuries.

This data was collected by the OHCHR from the first day of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, namely from February 24 to March 5, 2022, local time.

Furthermore, the OHCHR found 374 casualties in areas controlled by the Ukrainian government, with details of 65 deaths and 309 injuries. Then there were 129 casualties in areas controlled by separatists, consisting of 23 deaths and 106 injuries.

Finally, there were 620 casualties in other areas still controlled by the Ukrainian government, with details of 276 deaths and 344 injuries. These other areas include Kyiv, Cherkasy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Kherson, Odesa, Zaporizhzhia, and others.

The OHCHR estimates that the actual number of casualties could be higher than recorded, due to delays in data collection and difficulties in verifying casualties.
