Indonesia was the world's largest nickel producer in 2021.

Nickel is a strategically important commodity for the economy. It is a raw material for the production of batteries for various electronic devices, including electric vehicles, a sector experiencing increasing global growth.

Indonesia is known as the world's largest nickel producer. According to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Indonesia's nickel production reached 1 million metric tons in 2021, accounting for 37.04% of the world's nickel supply.

The Philippines, Indonesia's neighboring country, ranks second as the largest nickel producer with a production of 370,000 metric tons. Russia follows with a nickel production of 250,000 metric tons.

The USGS recorded total global nickel production in 2021 at 2.7 million metric tons. This represents a 7.57% increase compared to the previous year's production of 2.51 million metric tons.

90% of Indonesia's nickel reserves are located in several regions, namely Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, and North Maluku. One of the mining companies operating in these areas is PT Aneka Tambang through its subsidiary, PT Gag Nikel.
