Japanese automaker Nissan Motor reported a net loss attributable to owners of the parent entity of JPY 670.9 billion, or approximately Rp76.10 trillion (assuming Rp113.43 per yen), in 2024.
This represents Nissan's largest loss in the past five years, as shown in the graph.
Following this loss, Nissan plans to lay off approximately 20,000 employees to reduce its cost burden.
"Our annual financial results are a wake-up call. The reality is stark. Our variable costs are rising. Our fixed costs are higher than our current revenue can support," said Nissan CEO Espinosa, as reported by Reuters on Tuesday, May 13, 2025.
Nissan also plans to close seven of its plants by 2027 and cut its production target by 20%.
According to Reuters, the automaker's financial condition has been hit by weakening sales in the United States and China, followed by the failure of its merger attempt with Honda earlier this year.
