According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), global smartphone shipments reached 304.9 million units in Q1 2025.

IDC attributes the rise in global smartphone shipments in Q1 2025 to the trade war between the United States (US) and China.

In Q1 2025, Samsung held a 19.9% share of the global smartphone market, with shipments increasing by 0.6% (YoY) to 60.6 million units.

Apple came in second, with smartphone shipments growing by 10% (YoY) to 57.9 million units.

"Apple recorded its best first quarter ever in terms of units shipped, partly because the company stockpiled inventory to avoid US import tariffs," wrote IDC.

Apple's stockpiling of smartphones was also done for markets outside the US, as distributors feared that supply chain disruptions could lead to shortages or price spikes.

Xiaomi's smartphone shipments increased by 2.5% (YoY) to 41.8 million units; Oppo's decreased by 6.8% (YoY) to 23.5 million units; and Vivo's grew by 6.3% (YoY) to 22.7 million units.

Meanwhile, combined smartphone shipments from other brands were down 1.7% (YoY) to 98.4 million units.
