The Indonesian Nickel Mining Association (APNI) states that Indonesia's nickel royalty rate is among the highest compared to other nickel-producing countries.
Citing the Indonesian Mining Association (IMA) website, APNI Secretary General Meidy Katrin Lengkey said her organization compiled this comparison using a 10% royalty rate standard, referencing Government Regulation (PP) Number 81/2019, which regulates the rate for non-tax state revenue (PNBP).
PP Number 26/2022 also sets the nickel rate, especially for nickel ore, at 10% of the price per ton.
"I compared it with other countries. It turns out that of all nickel-producing countries, ours is the highest, at 10%. And that's not including the proposed 14-19%," said Meidy at an APNI press conference in Jakarta on Monday, March 17, 2025.
Meydi believes that with a 10% nickel royalty rate, Indonesia is among the countries with the highest nickel royalty rates globally. She added that this will increase further if the government approves the proposed progressive increase in royalty rates to 14-19%.
"Nickel-producing countries, some even base their royalties on profit. Like taxes. In several countries like America, Africa, Europe, and our neighboring countries, it's lower than in Indonesia," she said.
Based on APNI data, here are the nickel royalty rates in several nickel-producing countries worldwide by region:

* Australia: 2.5-5%
* Papua New Guinea: 2.5%
