Top 10 Rice-Producing Countries in 2023: Indonesia Included

Based on data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), global milled rice production in the 2022/2023 production season reached 512.96 million metric tons.

This figure is down 0.03% compared to the 2021/2022 production season, which reached 513.1 million metric tons.

In the 2022/2023 season, China was the world's largest producer of milled rice, with a production volume of 145.95 million metric tons.

China has consistently been the world's largest rice producer since 2019.

India ranked second with a production of 135.76 million metric tons, followed by Bangladesh with 36.35 million metric tons.

Indonesia was the fourth largest rice producer globally, with a production of 34 million metric tons in the 2022/2023 season.

However, according to USDA data, Indonesian rice consumption in that period exceeded its production, reaching 35.7 million metric tons.

Therefore, despite being among the major rice producers, Indonesia experienced a rice deficit of approximately 1.7 million metric tons in 2022/2023.

Meanwhile, several other Southeast Asian countries, such as Vietnam and Thailand, had large surpluses, even though their production figures were smaller than Indonesia's.
