UNHCR: Civilian Casualties in Ukraine Reach 1,123, with 364 Deaths

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has recorded 1,123 civilian casualties in Ukraine as of March 5, 2022, local time.

The OHCHR has been counting these casualties since Russia first announced its attack on Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

The OHCHR reported 364 civilian deaths, comprising 74 men, 42 women, 8 boys, 4 girls, 13 children of unspecified gender, and 223 adults of unspecified gender.

Meanwhile, 759 civilians were injured. This figure includes 67 men, 48 women, 2 boys, 11 girls, 28 children of unspecified gender, and 603 adults of unspecified gender.

Donetsk and Luhansk regions had the highest number of civilian casualties, with 503 victims: 88 deaths and 415 injuries. These two regions border both Ukraine and Russia.

The OHCHR found that the majority of casualties resulted from explosions caused by heavy artillery, multiple launch rocket systems, missiles, and air strikes.

According to the OHCHR, the actual number of casualties could be significantly higher than the reported figures. The OHCHR currently faces delays in data collection and difficulties verifying casualties.
