Bank Indonesia (BI) recorded Indonesia's external debt (ULN) at US$ 415.08 billion, equivalent to Rp 6,017.24 trillion (using an exchange rate of Rp 14,496/US$), in June 2021. This figure represents a 0.12% decrease compared to the previous month's US$ 415.6 billion (month-to-month/m-to-m).
This month-on-month decline marks the third instance in 2021. Previous decreases in external debt occurred in March 2021, following its peak of US$ 421.7 billion the previous month.
The second decline in ULN occurred in May 2021, amounting to 0.6%, and this trend continued into June 2021.
Compared to the end of 2020, Indonesia's ULN also decreased by 0.32% (year-to-date/ytd). Compared to June 2020, Indonesia's ULN increased by 1.87% (year-on-year/yoy).
On a quarterly basis, Indonesia's ULN decreased by 0.1% in Q2 2021 compared to the previous quarter (quarter-to-quarter/q-to-q). In Q1 2021, Indonesia's ULN was recorded at US$ 415.3 billion.
A more detailed breakdown shows that government ULN stood at US$ 205.03 billion in June 2021, a 0.7% increase compared to the previous month (m-to-m). Annually, government ULN grew by 4.3% (yoy). On a year-to-date basis (ytd), government debt decreased by 0.65%.
Central bank ULN was recorded at US$ 2.84 billion in June 2021, a decrease of 1.18% month-on-month (m-to-m). Annually, central bank ULN grew by 2.98% (yoy). On a year-to-date basis (ytd), central bank ULN decreased by 1.2%.
Private sector ULN stood at US$ 207.22 billion in June 2021, a decrease of 0.99% month-on-month. Annually, private sector ULN decreased by 0.45% (yoy). On a year-to-date basis (ytd), private sector ULN increased by 0.01%.
Indonesia's external debt ratio in Q2 2021 improved to 37.46% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This figure is lower than the Q1 2021 figure of 39.04% of GDP and the end-of-year figure of 39.31% of GDP.
Indonesia's ULN in June 2021 also decreased to 189.18% of exports. In March 2021, Indonesia's ULN reached 208.91% of exports. Compared to the end of last year, Indonesia's ULN was equivalent to 214.54% of exports.
