The price increase for Premium-type fuel oil (BBM) scheduled for October 10, 2018, was canceled. Therefore, the price at Pertamina's Public Fuel Filling Stations (SPBU) in the Java, Madura, and Bali (Jamali) regions remains unchanged at Rp 6,550/liter. In other regions, the price of this 88-octane fuel also remains at the previous price of Rp 6,450/liter.
At the beginning of President Joko Widodo's (Jokowi) administration, on November 18, 2014, the price of Premium increased by Rp 2,000/liter (30%), reaching Rp 8,500/liter—its highest level ever. President Jokowi's policy aimed to reduce energy subsidies deemed misdirected, as at that time, the fuel subsidies largely benefited the affluent. The savings from fuel subsidies were then used for development in more productive sectors such as health, education, and infrastructure.
During President Soeharto's administration, the price of Premium increased several times, from Rp 150/liter in 1980 to Rp 1,000/liter in 1998. Similarly, price increases also occurred during the administrations of President Abdurrahman Wahid/Gusdur (1999-2001), President Megawati (July 2001-October 2004), and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (October 2004-October 2014).
