Residents of the Riau Islands have the highest calorie consumption from meat in Indonesia in 2023.

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that the average per capita (per person) calorie consumption from meat nationally in March 2023 was 81.34 kilocalories (kcal) per day.

Based on region, Riau Islands was the province with the highest national meat calorie consumption in 2023. The average per capita calorie consumption from this animal protein reached 133.23 kcal.

DKI Jakarta followed in second place with an average per capita meat calorie consumption of 133.01 kcal per day. This was followed by Bangka Belitung Islands with an average per capita meat calorie consumption of 118.17 kcal.

Meanwhile, North Maluku had the lowest average per capita meat calorie consumption in Indonesia, at 19.2 kcal per day.

This was followed by West Sulawesi and Southeast Sulawesi, with average per capita meat calorie consumptions of 22.85 kcal and 27.5 kcal per day, respectively.

BPS stated that compared to other Southeast Asian countries, meat consumption in Indonesia is still relatively low.

"Besides the high price, the low meat consumption among the Indonesian population is also due to low purchasing power," wrote BPS in its report.

9. Banten: 97.75 kcal
10. West Java: 96.1 kcal
