Maluku Barat Province has the highest per capita fish calorie consumption in Indonesia.

As a maritime nation, Indonesia possesses vast potential marine resources and abundant fish, making fish a primary protein source for the Indonesian people.

The Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) recorded that West Maluku was the province with the highest national average fish calorie consumption in 2022. The average per capita calorie consumption from fish in West Maluku was 108.6 kcal per day.

North Kalimantan followed in second place with an average per capita calorie consumption from fish of 100.22 kcal per day. This was followed by Southeast Sulawesi with an average per capita calorie consumption from fish of 99.58 kcal.

BPS also recorded the 6 provinces with the lowest calorie consumption from fish, 4 of which are from Java Island.

These four provinces are Yogyakarta Special Region, Central Java, West Java, and East Java, with an average per capita calorie consumption from fish below 50 kcal per day.

"This is suspected to be due to the still low fish-eating culture among the people on Java Island," wrote BPS in its report.

3. Southeast Sulawesi: 99.58 kcal
4. South Sulawesi: 94.31 kcal
5. North Sulawesi: 91.82 kcal
6. West Sulawesi: 89.95 kcal
7. Aceh: 88.82 kcal
8. Maluku: 87.05 kcal
9. Bangka Belitung Islands: 86.17 kcal
10. Riau Islands: 85.42 kcal
