The 2017 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) was held at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) BSD Serpong, South Tangerang. This event, taking place from August 10-20, 2017, is expected to boost domestic car sales, which have been sluggish.
Besides being the country with the largest domestic car sales in ASEAN, Indonesia has also been a net exporter of cars since 2007. In that year, Completely Built Up (CBU) car exports reached 60,267 units, while imports were only 55,112 units, resulting in a trade surplus of 5,155 units. Indonesian car exports peaked in 2015 at almost 208,000 units, but have since declined.
Indonesia is also the second largest car producer in Southeast Asia after Thailand. From January to June 2017, Indonesian car production reached 597,522 units. Of this amount, 113,000 units were exported internationally. Meanwhile, Indonesian car imports during the same period reached only 45,000 units.
