Debit Card Transaction Value Down 1.9% in August 2021

Bank Indonesia (BI) recorded debit card transaction values of Rp 613.3 trillion in August 2021. This figure represents a 1.9% decrease from the previous month's Rp 625 trillion, but a 5.46% increase compared to August 2020.

The decrease in transactions occurred in two categories. Firstly, the value of cash transactions fell by 4.6%, from Rp 265.8 trillion in July 2021 to Rp 254.2 trillion the following month. Secondly, the value of interbank transfer transactions decreased by 4.5% to Rp 96.4 trillion.

Meanwhile, the value of shopping transactions increased by 13.7%, from Rp 20.7 trillion in July 2021 to Rp 24 trillion the following month. Furthermore, the value of intra-bank transfer transactions saw a slight increase of 0.46%, reaching Rp 238.7 trillion.

In addition to value, the volume of debit card transactions also decreased last month. The number fell by 1.8%, from 604.9 million transactions in July 2021 to 595.3 million transactions the following month.

The decrease in transaction volume occurred across three categories: cash transaction volume decreased by 2.82% from 347.3 million transactions in July 2021 to 337.7 million cash transactions; intra-bank transaction volume decreased by 0.9% to 149.2 million transactions; and interbank transfer transaction volume decreased by 13.94% to 47.6 million transactions last month. Meanwhile, the volume of shopping transactions increased by 11.6% to 59.5 million transactions.
