Of the 403 teachers surveyed, 52.6% admitted to having loans from banks or rural banks (BPR) as of May 2024.

The next most common source of loans was family or relatives, accounting for 19.3% of respondents. Third were savings and loan cooperatives or Baitul Maal wa Tamwil (BMT), a type of Islamic microfinance institution, at 13.7%.

Friends or neighbors accounted for 8.7% of loans, followed by online lenders (pinjol) at 5.2%. The remaining 0.3% borrowed from other sources.

IDEAS notes that this financially strained condition is experienced by the majority of teacher respondents. Many teachers already hold second jobs to make ends meet.

The survey on teacher welfare in Indonesia was conducted by IDEAS and Dompet Dhuafa during the first week of May 2024 in conjunction with National Education Day.

The online survey of 403 teachers across 25 provinces comprised 291 respondents from Java and 112 from outside Java.

Respondents included 123 civil servant (PNS) teachers, 118 permanent foundation teachers, 117 honorary or contract teachers, and 45 PPPK teachers.
