To improve capitalization and synergy among similar State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), the government streamlined their number by forming holding companies (parent companies) based on sector. A holding company for the Plantation sector has already been established, followed by a mining sector holding company, PT Indonesia Asahan Aluminium (Inalum), and subsequently a financial sector holding company under the parent company PT Danareksa.
Based on data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the total assets of SOEs in 2016 reached Rp 6,468.9 trillion, a 10.7 percent increase from the previous year's Rp 5,841.9 trillion. The number of SOEs by the end of 2016 reached 118 companies, comprising 14 Public Companies (Perum), 20 Listed Persero Companies, and 84 Non-Listed Persero Companies.
According to their business sector, the largest SOE assets are in the finance and insurance sector, reaching Rp 3,268.8 trillion. This figure grew by 16 percent from the previous year. Second is the electricity and gas sector with assets of Rp 1,365.9 trillion, down 2.7 percent from the previous year. SOEs with the smallest assets are in the real estate sector at Rp 2.77 trillion and the water supply and waste management sector at only Rp 1.57 trillion.
