More Than Half of Indonesian Youth Concentrated on Java Island in 2023

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) calculates that the number of young people in Indonesia reached 64.16 million in 2023, or 23.18% of Indonesia's total population.

BPS sampled young people according to Law Number 40 of 2009, namely Indonesian citizens aged 16-30 years. This means, according to BPS, those included as young people in 2023 were those born between 1993 and 2007.

Java Island remains the region with the highest percentage of young people in Indonesia in 2023. BPS states that more than half, or 54.69%, of young people are concentrated on Java Island.

However, BPS observes a declining trend in the percentage of young people on Java Island. The number of young people in Java in 2023 decreased compared to a decade earlier, in 2014, which was 55.95%.

BPS assesses that this phenomenon may be due to the equitable development of infrastructure outside Java Island.

"This attracts people, including young people, to live and seek livelihoods outside Java Island," writes BPS in its 2023 Indonesian Youth Statistics report.

The island with the next highest proportion of young people is Sumatra at 22.92%.

Sulawesi and Kalimantan also have percentages of 7.40% and 6.23%, respectively. Other islands account for a total of 8.75%.
