The Increasingly Digital Lifestyle Leads Banks to Reduce the Number of ATMs

Bank Indonesia (BI) reports a decrease in the number of Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) nationwide. By the end of Q4 2020, the number of ATMs totaled 104,600 units, a 1.87% decrease compared to the same period in 2019.

The largest quarterly decrease in the number of ATMs occurred during the July-September 2019 period. At that time, the number of ATMs decreased by 1.47%, from 108,200 units to 106,600 units.

According to the Indonesian Payment System Association (ASPI), one of the reasons for the decrease in the number of ATMs is the increasingly digital lifestyle of the Indonesian people. People are now increasingly using digital wallets and transactions through bank e-channels.

This can be seen in the 55.7% growth in SMS and mobile banking transactions in Q4 2020 compared to the same period the previous year. Meanwhile, Neurosensum research recorded a 44% growth in digital wallet users in 2020.
