Indonesian Debit Card Transaction Values and Volumes Surge at the End of 2021

Bank Indonesia (BI) reports show a surge in the value and volume of debit card transactions in Indonesia at the end of 2021. Debit card transactions totaled Rp 724.59 trillion in December 2021.

This figure represents an 11.24% increase from the previous month's Rp 651.38 trillion, and a 7.14% increase compared to December 2020, which recorded only Rp 676.31 trillion.

The increase in transaction value occurred across all categories. First, the value of cash transactions using debit cards reached Rp 281.87 trillion, a 9.65% increase from November 2021's Rp 257.05 trillion. Second, the value of debit card shopping transactions increased by 17.59%, from Rp 30.75 trillion to Rp 36.16 trillion last month.

Third, the value of intra-bank transfer transactions using debit cards rose by 8.37%, from Rp 249.42 trillion to Rp 270.31 trillion. Finally, the value of inter-bank transfer transactions using debit cards increased by 19.35%, from Rp 114.14 trillion to Rp 136.23 trillion.

Meanwhile, the volume of debit card transactions reached 654.70 million in December 2021, a 7.94% increase from the previous month's 606.54 million.

In detail, the volume of cash transactions using debit cards increased by 7.65% to 372.01 million transactions. The volume of shopping transactions using debit cards also increased by 15.07% to 82.53 million transactions.

The volume of intra-bank transfer transactions using debit cards rose by 6.66% to 141.36 million transactions. Furthermore, the volume of inter-bank transfer transactions using debit cards increased by 3.63% to 58.78 million transactions.
