Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB): 1,441 Natural Disasters Hit Indonesia Through June 2021

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded a total of 1,441 natural disasters that struck Indonesia from January 1 to June 18, 2021. The most frequent disaster was flooding, with 599 incidents. This was followed by tornadoes with 398 incidents, landslides with 293 incidents, and forest fires with 109 incidents.

Meanwhile, 20 earthquakes hit Indonesia from January 1 to June 18, 2021. One of these earthquakes occurred in Central Maluku Regency on Wednesday, June 16, 2021.

This earthquake had a magnitude of 6.1 and was felt for about 3-5 seconds. As a result of the earthquake, thousands of residents evacuated to forests and hills.

Although it hasn't been long, the intensity of earthquakes in Indonesia is among the lowest compared to other disasters. The number is the same as high tides and abrasion, and one rank above drought, which reached two incidents.

Natural disasters throughout 2021 have caused 5.3 million people to evacuate. 12,800 people were injured, 69 went missing, and 493 died.

In addition, 135,500 houses were damaged due to natural disasters. Public facilities damaged due to natural disasters reached 2,900 units. Meanwhile, damaged offices and bridges numbered 492 and 283 units, respectively.
