Indonesia experiences thousands of earthquakes every year. The number of earthquakes recorded by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reached 8,264 in 2020. This figure is lower than the previous year, which recorded 11,515 earthquakes.
The majority of earthquakes, 8,020, were less than Magnitude 5. Meanwhile, 244 earthquakes were greater than Magnitude 5. March was the month with the highest number of earthquakes, recording 965 tremors, or 11.7% of the total earthquakes in 2020.
Earthquakes have become a daily occurrence in several regions, including West Aceh, Bali-Lombok-Sumbawa-Sumba, Central Sulawesi-Gorontalo, North Maluku, and Seram.
