Indonesian sago production declined in the final quarter of 2022.

Indonesia's forest sago production fluctuated throughout 2022, consistent with data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) in its 2022 Forestry Production Statistics report.

Production volume increased during the first three quarters of 2022 but declined at the end of the year.

Specifically, first-quarter 2022 forest sago production reached 2,370 tons. This figure slightly increased to 2,380 tons in the second quarter.

Production further rose to 2,410 tons in the third quarter. However, in the fourth quarter, domestic sago production dropped significantly to 1,760 tons.

Total Indonesian forest sago production in 2022 reached 8,940 tons.

BPS also notes that most sago production originates from Maluku and Papua, as sago is a staple food in both regions.

Furthermore, Putu Juli Ardika, Director General of Agro-Industry at the Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin), stated that sago flour is a potential local food source that can be developed as an alternative staple food.

"Sago's use as a raw material for food products is extensive, including in analog rice, instant noodles, and sweeteners. Additionally, sago can be developed as a raw material for bioethanol, biogas, and biodegradable plastics," said Putu via the official Kemenperin website on Friday, May 26, 2023.

The Ministry of Industry also explains that sago starch offers health benefits due to its gluten-free nature and low glycemic index, making it suitable for diabetics.
