BMKG: Recent Earthquake in Northeast Sumedang Regency, Magnitude 4.8, No Tsunami Potential

A recent earthquake measuring 4.8 magnitude struck Sumedang Regency on December 31, 2023. According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake's epicenter was located on land, approximately 2 kilometers northeast of Sumedang Regency.

"Earthquake felt, Magnitude: 4.8 on December 31, 2023, 13:34:24," BMKG wrote in its release. The earthquake occurred at coordinates 6.85°S (South Latitude) and 107.94°E (East Longitude).

The earthquake was felt on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in several areas, including Sumedang, Lembang, Subang, Bandung, and Garut, with intensities ranging from III-IV, III, II-III, II-III, and II, respectively. An MMI scale of III means the earthquake was felt by several people but did not cause damage or accidents. Light hanging objects swayed, and window panes vibrated.
