Indonesia Ranks Among Countries Most Frequently Hit by Disasters

Indonesia ranked among the countries most affected by natural disasters in 2023. This is recorded in the *2023 Disasters in Numbers* report from the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED). CRED collects data on natural disasters worldwide, ranging from floods, earthquakes, extreme weather, droughts, landslides, storms, volcanic activity, to forest fires. However, CRED only records disaster events meeting at least one of the following four criteria:

* Resulting in at least 10 deaths
* Affecting at least 100 people
* Triggering a declaration of a state of emergency
* Triggering an international appeal for assistance

According to CRED, throughout 2023 there were 399 natural disaster events worldwide that met these criteria. The highest number of disasters occurred in the United States, with 25 events. This was followed by China and India with 17 events each, and Brazil with 16 events. Indonesia ranked 4th globally with 15 disasters, tied with the Philippines. In other countries, the number of disasters meeting CRED's criteria was lower, as shown in the graph.
