Recent 4.9 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Jayapura City

A magnitude (M) 4.9 earthquake struck Jayapura City. The epicenter was at sea. "The earthquake's epicenter was 23 km northeast of Jayapura City at sea, and this earthquake is felt and should be relayed to the public," wrote BMKG (Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency) on its official website, February 27, 2023.

The earthquake occurred at 12:16:57 PM. It was located at a depth of 10 kilometers and posed no tsunami threat. The earthquake's coordinates were 2.40°S (South Latitude) and 140.75°E (East Longitude).

The earthquake was felt on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in Jayapura City, Keerom Regency, and Jayapura Regency with intensities of III-IV, III-IV, and II-III respectively. An MMI scale of IV means the earthquake was felt by some people but caused no damage or accidents. Light hanging objects swayed, and glass windows vibrated.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) recorded nine significant earthquakes felt by the public across Indonesia in the past week, varying in magnitude and depth.
