Indonesia's Forest Area Increase Marginal in 2022

Data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) processed by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) shows that the proportion of forest area to the total land area of Indonesia has remained relatively constant or fluctuated slightly between 2017 and 2022.

In 2017, the proportion of forest area to the total land area was 50.18%. The following year, it decreased to 49.80%.

From 2019 to 2020, the proportion increased to 50.10% and 50.90%. However, in 2021, the proportion of forest area slightly decreased to 50.80%.

The latest data from the KLHK's Public Information Service website shows that the area of forested land across the Indonesian mainland in 2022 increased from 2021, reaching 96.0 million hectares (ha) or 51.2% of the total land area. KLHK states that 92% of the total forested area, or 88.3 million ha, is located within designated forest areas.

KLHK explains that government monitoring of forests and deforestation covers the entire Indonesian mainland, totaling 187 million hectares, both inside and outside designated forest areas, and is based on the Indonesian Landform Map (RBI) within the One Map Policy (KSP) program.

This monitoring utilizes primary Landsat satellite imagery provided by the Aerospace Research Organization (OR-PA) of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and is visually identified by KLHK technical interpretation personnel deployed throughout Indonesia.
