Recent 4.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Nabire Region

A magnitude (M) 4.6 earthquake struck Nabire. The epicenter was inland. "The earthquake's epicenter was 9 km northwest of Nabire, and the quake was felt," wrote the BMKG (Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency) on its official website on May 16, 2024.

The earthquake occurred at 02:36:08. It was located at a depth of 25.0 kilometers and posed no tsunami threat. The earthquake's coordinates were 3.29°S (South Latitude) and 135.48°E (East Longitude).

The earthquake was felt in Nabire with an intensity of II-III on the MMI scale. An intensity of III means the quake was felt by several people but caused no damage or injuries. Light hanging objects swayed, and window panes vibrated.
