Recent 4.7 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Genyem, Jayapura

A recent earthquake measuring 4.7 magnitude struck Genyem, Jayapura, on July 17, 2023. According to a release from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake's epicenter was located on land, approximately 29 kilometers northwest of Genyem, Jayapura.

"Earthquake felt, Magnitude: 4.7 on July 17, 2023, 04:07:27," BMKG wrote in its release. The earthquake occurred at coordinates 2.34°S (South Latitude) and 140.09°E (East Longitude).

The earthquake was felt on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in several areas, including Jayapura City, Jayapura Regency, and Keerom Regency, with intensities of III, III, and II respectively. An MMI scale of III means the earthquake was felt by several people but did not cause damage or accidents. Light hanging objects swayed, and window panes vibrated.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded five significant earthquakes felt by the public across Indonesia in the past week, varying in magnitude and depth.
