Meanwhile, North Sumatra held the highest position in the use of forest areas for mining compared to Aceh and West Sumatra.

During the 2012-2024 period, the use of forest areas for mining in North Sumatra reached 162.40 thousand ha.

“This figure reflects the high intensity of natural resource exploitation, especially commodities such as gold, coal, and other minerals,” FITRA explained.

In Aceh, the release of forest for mining during 2012-2024 reached 67.45 thousand ha. According to FITRA, this figure is high considering Aceh is one of the few regions with a relatively large primary forest cover.

“West Sumatra, despite its low figure (4.72 thousand ha), still shows that pressure on forest areas is widespread and structural,” FITRA explained.
