According to data from the Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut), Indonesia's net deforestation area in 2024 reached 175.4 thousand hectares (ha).

"This figure is obtained from gross deforestation of 216.2 thousand ha minus reforestation efforts, which amounted to 40.8 thousand ha," said Kemenhut in a press release (20/3/2025).

Referring to the 2024 Ministry of Forestry Statistics report, 35 out of 38 Indonesian provinces experienced net deforestation in that year.

The most extensive net deforestation occurred in Riau Province. Similar phenomena were also widely recorded in several other provinces on the islands of Kalimantan, Sumatra, and Sulawesi.

Riau: 29,702.1 ha
East Kalimantan: 19,206.8 ha
Central Kalimantan: 16,054.3 ha
Aceh: 11,208.5 ha
West Kalimantan: 8,878.7 ha
Jambi: 8,290.6 ha
Southeast Sulawesi: 7,925.9 ha
North Sumatra: 7,034.9 ha
West Sulawesi: 6,824.3 ha
West Sumatra: 6,634.2 ha

In 2024, only Central Java Province and Jakarta had negative net deforestation figures. This means that reforestation was greater than gross deforestation in those areas.

Meanwhile, Bali was the only province whose data was not identified, or where no deforestation occurred.
