According to Pantau Gambut data, from January to August 2025, there were 9,336 hotspots in Indonesia's peat hydrological units (KHG).

The highest number of hotspots in peat ecosystems were found in West Kalimantan.

The following are the top 5 provinces with the most karhutla hotspots in KHG areas from January to August 2025, according to Pantau Gambut findings:

1. West Kalimantan: 8,005 hotspots

2. Riau: 7,037 hotspots

3. Aceh: 1,871 hotspots

4. West Sumatra: 1,294 hotspots

5. Jambi: 1,026 hotspots

Overall, karhutla hotspots in KHG areas were particularly found in areas with palm oil concessions (5,080 hotspots), and in forest utilization business licensing areas (PBPH) (4,256 hotspots).

Previously, Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni stated that the karhutla in mid-2025 was due to extreme weather.

However, according to Peat Monitoring, this problem is caused by corporate activities.

"Forestry Minister Raja Juli Antoni repeatedly blamed hot weather and the community for the 2025 karhutla," said Peat Monitoring in a press release (September 15, 2025).
