Air quality monitoring company IQAir's report shows that more countries had air quality exceeding World Health Organization (WHO) standards in 2024.

The worst air quality was recorded in the Republic of Chad, a country in Central Africa, with an average PM2.5 concentration of 91.8 micrograms per cubic meter (µg/m³) throughout last year.

According to *Katadata*, Chad was absent from the IQAir list in 2023 due to insufficient data. However, the country also ranked as the most polluted in 2022, affected by Saharan dust and uncontrolled agricultural burning.

The average concentration of small and harmful airborne particles known as PM2.5 in Chad in 2024 was slightly higher than in 2022. The WHO recommends a PM2.5 level of no more than 5 µg/m³, a standard met by only 17% of cities last year.

Second was Bangladesh with an average score of 78 µg/m³. The average haze levels from both Bangladesh and Chad were 15 times higher than the WHO guideline.

Below Chad and Bangladesh is Pakistan with an average air quality of 73.7 µg/m³, followed by the Democratic Republic of Congo at 58.2 and India at 50.6.

India, ranked fifth in the highest haze ranking, experienced a 7% decrease in average PM2.5 compared to the previous year, reaching 50.6 mg/m³.

Nevertheless, the country accounts for 12 of the world's 20 most polluted cities. Byrnihat, located in India's heavily industrialized northeast, ranked first, recording an average PM2.5 level of 128 mg/m³.

Other countries in the top 10 list of countries with the worst air quality last year include Tajikistan, Nepal, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi.
