Central Papua, Center of Armed Conflict and Violence in Papua 2024

Based on media monitoring conducted by the National Human Rights Commission (Komnas HAM), 113 human rights incidents were recorded in Papua Island from the beginning of this year until December 16, 2024.

Eighty-five of these incidents were cases of armed conflict and violence, the majority of which occurred in Central Papua.

Detailed by regency, armed conflict and violence occurred most frequently in Intan Jaya (Central Papua) with 22 cases.

This is followed by Puncak Regency (Central Papua) with 17 cases; Puncak Jaya Regency (Central Papua) with 13 cases; and Paniai (Central Papua) with 12 cases.

Similar cases also occurred in Yahukimo (Papua Mountains), Nduga (Papua Mountains), and Pegunungan Bintang (Papua Mountains), as shown in the graph.

"So, the areas prone to conflict and violence are in Central Papua Province. Based on media monitoring, the figures are quite extreme compared to other provinces or regions in Papua," said Komnas HAM Chairperson Atnike Nova Sigiro in an online press conference on Wednesday, December 18, 2024.

Komnas HAM also recorded that all armed conflicts and violence in Papua resulted in 61 deaths and 39 injuries.

In addition, 17 people were victims of hostage-taking. "They are generally construction workers in the Papua region," said Atnike.
