Indonesia Consistently Meets Carbon Emission Reduction Targets Over the Past Three Years

Indonesia has consistently met its carbon emission reduction targets over the past three years. The use of new and renewable energy (NRE) has contributed to emission reductions.

In 2021, Indonesia successfully reduced emissions by 69.5 million tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2e), according to data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM). This emission reduction exceeded the target of 67 million tons of CO2e.

In 2019, Indonesia successfully reduced emissions by 54.8 million tons of CO2e, exceeding the set target of 51 million tons of CO2e.

The same occurred in 2020. Indonesia successfully reduced emissions by 64.4 million tons of CO2e, exceeding the target of 58 million tons of CO2e.

Indonesia failed to meet its carbon emission reduction targets in 2017 and 2018. Emission reductions amounted to 29 million tons of CO2e against a target of 39 million tons of CO2e in 2017. In 2018, emission reductions amounted to 40.6 million tons of CO2e against a target of 45 million tons of CO2e.

The mitigation action that contributed most significantly to emission reductions was the implementation of NRE. In 2021, NRE implementation helped Indonesia reduce emissions by 30.34 million tons of CO2e.
