BMKG: Recent Earthquake Northeast of Saparua Magnitude 4.3, No Tsunami Potential

A recent earthquake of magnitude 4.3 struck Saparua on January 12, 2024. According to a release from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the earthquake's epicenter was located in the sea, approximately 19 kilometers northeast of Saparua.

"Earthquake felt, Magnitude: 4.3 on January 12, 2024, 02:04:20," BMKG wrote in its release. The earthquake occurred at coordinates 3.42°S (South Latitude) and 128.72°E (East Longitude).

The earthquake was felt on the Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale in several areas, including Kairatu and Saparua, with intensities of III and III respectively. An MMI scale of III means the earthquake was felt by some people, but caused no damage or injuries. Light hanging objects swayed, and window panes vibrated.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 10 significant earthquakes felt by the public across Indonesia in the past week, varying in magnitude and depth.
