Dasht-e Loot, a plain in Iran, is the hottest place on Earth, reaching a maximum temperature of 70.7 degrees Celsius between 2003 and 2009. Human survival is impossible in this area. The intense heat is such that the desert sand can fry an egg.

Dasht-e Loot, meaning "Plain of Emptiness" in Persian, is believed by scientists to have been an ocean floor millions of years ago. The hottest part is Gandom Beryan, a 480 square kilometer highland. The volcanic gravel covering the plain is a major contributor to the high temperature due to its absorption of solar energy.

Another factor contributing to the extreme heat in Dasht-e Loot is the lack of vegetation. The salty soil makes it difficult for plants to survive. The only living creatures that can thrive are desert moss and tamarisk, a hardy shrub that can grow up to 10 meters tall.
