Projected Demand for Electric Vehicle Batteries Reaches Hundreds of GWh

Pertamina is starting to prepare for the adoption of renewable energy, including the use of electric vehicles. This state-owned company predicts an increase in the demand for battery capacity. The amount needed varies depending on the energy scenario used. These scenarios are divided into Business as Usual (BAU), Market Driven (MD), and Green Transition (GT).

Under the BAU scenario, the penetration of energy transition remains low because coal use still dominates. This scenario, which has not yet received support from renewable energy policies, is predicted to require only 2 Gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electric vehicle battery capacity in 2030. This figure will increase to 34 GWh in 2050.

Meanwhile, the MD scenario requires 11 GWh of electric vehicle battery capacity in 2030 and will increase to 160 GWh two decades later. The MD scenario shows a beginning of energy transition penetration, as it is supported by renewable energy policies and emission regulations.

The final scenario, GT, represents the most ambitious plan for renewable energy transition. Renewable energy policies are already in place. Therefore, the prediction for the need for electric vehicle battery capacity is also the highest, rising from 41 GWh in 2030 to 198 GWh in 2050.
