According to the International Energy Agency (IEA) estimate, global coal exports in 2023 reached 1.47 billion tons, a 6.6% increase compared to 2022 (year-on-year/yoy).
In 2023, Indonesia remained the largest coal exporter, with export volumes of 500 million tons, or 34.1% of total global export supply.
Australia ranked second with coal exports of 348 million tons, equivalent to 23.7% of total global exports.
Russia was ranked third with exports of 221 million tons, equivalent to 15.1% of total global exports.
Other countries among the largest coal exporters include the United States, South Africa, Colombia, and Canada, with details as shown in the graph.
Combined, the seven aforementioned countries accounted for approximately 89.8% of total global coal exports in 2023.
In 2023, coal sales from these major exporting countries generally increased.
The largest increase was in the United States, where coal exports in 2023 rose by 9.1% (yoy).
Indonesia's coal exports increased by 6.2% (yoy), and South Africa's by 2.9% (yoy).
Exports from Australia, Canada, and Colombia also increased by approximately 1% (yoy).
Meanwhile, in 2023, Russian coal exports decreased by 1.2% (yoy).
