Biofuel is considered a renewable energy source, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and gaining attention in the transition to a low-carbon economy.
According to the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), biofuel or biofuel-based fuel (BBN) is fuel produced from renewable raw materials through specific processes or technologies. BBN is divided into two types: biogasoline for gasoline-powered engines and biodiesel for diesel-powered engines.
British Petroleum recorded global BBN production at 1.68 million barrels of oil equivalent per day (bopd) in 2020. This figure is a 6.31% correction from the previous year's production of 1.79 million barrels.
In 2020, the United States was the world's largest biofuel producer, with 602,000 bopd. Brazil ranked second with 395,000 bopd.
Indonesia ranked third with biofuel production of 126,000 bopd. This production figure increased slightly from the previous year's 124,000 bopd. With the B30 Mandatory Program, all diesel fuel in Indonesia is required to have at least a 30% biodiesel and 70% solar blend. In 2022, the government also plans to increase the biodiesel content to B40.
Furthermore, Germany produced 65,000 bopd, China 63,000 bopd, Thailand 44,000 bopd, France 43,000 bopd, the Netherlands 37,000 bopd, Spain 32,000 bopd, and Argentina 27,000 bopd.
In terms of BBN type, biogasoline production reached 960,000 bopd in 2020. The United States produced 52.2% or 501,000 bopd of the total global biogasoline production last year. Meanwhile, biodiesel production reached 716,000 bopd in 2020. Biodiesel production was mainly dominated by Europe at 34.2% (245,000 bopd) and Asia Pacific at 33.5% (240,000 bopd).
