One Day of War Reduces Oil Shipments in the Strait of Hormuz by 86%

Referring to a report by the Turkish news agency Anadolu Agency, oil tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz fell sharply in early March 2026, a day after the United States and Israel attacked Iran.

The Strait of Hormuz is a global maritime trade route located between Oman and Iran.

According to Anadolu's analysis of real-time data from Kpler, on February 27-28, 2026, there were still about 21 million barrels of oil per day being transported through the Strait of Hormuz.

However, on March 1, 2026, a day after the attack on Iran, only three oil tankers with a total cargo of 2.8 million barrels crossed the strait.

"With an average flow since the beginning of this year of 19.8 million barrels per day, the shipments on March 1 marked an 86% drop from the 2026 average," Anadolu said in its report (2/3/2026).

"This sharp drop shows that the cargo was initially sent in a hurry due to increasing risks, followed by a near-complete halt in crossings due to worsening conditions," it continued.

As for the worsening conditions, they occurred after the Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday (28/2/2026) local time.

"The closure of the Strait of Hormuz by IRGC forces is currently underway following the attack on Iran," IRGC Brigadier General Ibrahim Jabari told Lebanese media Al-Mayadeen, as reported by Katadata.co.id.
